There's been a tendency recently in ready-to-wear to both reveal and conceal: cold-shoulders on a long-sleeved high-necked dress for instance. Or think about Angelina Jolie at the recent Oscars wearing a sober black gown with a provocative split-up-to-there slit. 

 It has also spawned a fascination with net-like fabrics from several of the designers. Some have given it an athletic spin, while others favor something more attuned to the Helmut Newton-esque dominatrix that seemingly lurks inside so many of us. Here are a few examples.


It all began a year ago with the Jil Sander hat with a facial net. I love it because it manages to be a sporty beanie AND a vintage 1940s lady-like creation all in one. In this Vogue.com photograph, model Hanne Gaby Odiele successfully negotiates eating an ice cream cone whilst wearing it.







Here is the marvelously iconic Anna Dello Russo in a pale blue version of the same hat.

For his FW12 Collection, Alexander Wang showed fishnet turtlenecks pulled up over models' faces. Style.com's reviewer thought the turtlenecks "recalled surgical 'flu masks" He also showed fishnet socks.














At Versace for FW12 models strutted the runway wearing outrageous "fishnet" leather and sparkly boots. The NY Times featured them on their fabulous footwear blog, The Daily Shoe






Hot off the Paris runway, from Rick Owens, a face net with a homey touch, knitted from yarn.

As I mentioned recently, the current fascination amongst certain runway designers and celebrities with racy lingerie looks often brings to mind Helmut Newton 's style of photography. If only he were still alive, what a moment he'd be having. Unfortunately he died in a macabre accident when his car hit a wall in the driveway of Chateau Marmont which had for several years served as his L.A. residence. It has been speculated that Newton suffered a heart attack in the moments before the collision. Newton favorite Nadja Auermann appeared in many of his portraits including these photos taken for American Vogue in 1994. Newton was born in Berlin in 1920. Nan Goldin, Fashion Photographer!

"Documentary photographer Nan Goldin, known for her exploration of gender politics and producing intimate and often autobiographical images incorporating themes of love, friendship and sexuality, recently shot her first-ever ad campaign, for Bottega Veneta.  Creative director Tomas Maier has followed Goldin’s work and asked her to partner with the brand. “Nan’s work is intensely personal, with a sincere and unusual focus on the individual,” said Maier.
